Innovative programs can solve healthcare labor challenges

 

The challenges of worker retention in today’s economy are nowhere more acutely felt than in the healthcare industry. Driven by the loss last year of an estimated 1.2 million nurses, healthcare businesses must turn to innovative answers to attract and retain new workers to the field.

 

In our podcast, David Tyler, Grant Thornton’s national managing principal of its Healthcare practice, spoke recently with Amanda Tilton, chief nursing officer at Bayada Home Health Care, about the difficulties of worker retention in the healthcare field and potential strategies to address them.

 

Through a multitude of employee-focused initiatives -- flexible scheduling, a meaningful online rewards platform, an “Advance to LPN” accredited training for home health aides to go to nursing school, a nurse residency program and a hire-to-retire retention journey – Bayada has found success offering their employees incentives and choices, with solutions that can be applied in many other healthcare companies. David and Amanda also discussed the challenges of employee mental health and how to align the altruistic impulses of healthcare workers to practices and programs that help make working in healthcare both enjoyable and fulfilling.
